02-22-08

Ornaments can add charm and interest to your garden. they can be sundials, weathervanes, bird baths, fountains and gazebos just to name a few.

Weathervanes are an importaant tool, for showing wind direction, but they also add charm and interest to your garden, there is the the tradional style roosters, sailing ships, flying ducks etc. Set the weathervane up high on a shed, garage or gazebo where it will catch th breeze.

Bird baths are greatly appreciated by both birds and bees. it can be placed in a fairly formal setting, as a focal point at the end of a path or in the centre of a courtyard or in a more casual setting under a tree or amongst garden plants.

Sundials make a great focal point, especially when set on a pedastal in the centre of a garden or at the end of a path. Moulded concrete and stone pedastals are available from garden centres or make your own. Take care when buying a sundial as many have been designed for the northern hemisphere and wont show the correct time for Australia. Position the sundial where it will receive full son.

Outdoor furniture is a very useful addition to your backyard, can be made of timer, wrought iron, aluminium and plastic. Choose a style that compliments your area and choose furniture that is goof quality and comfortable or it wont get used. Generally you get what you pay for.

Other ideas would be statues, wishing wells, scarecrows and old farm implements.
